Stefanie Larson's Volleyball Student-Athlete Blog

School is back in session…without a doubt. One week down and I’m already wondering how I’m going to survive this semester. Thankfully I became a pro at time management a while ago, although I do forget to factor in the need for sleep sometimes.

This year I enrolled in my first 8:30am class at Webster. I figured I would be used to getting up early since I had an internship and an early morning stocking job at PetSmart all summer long (and by early morning stocking I mean I clock-in by 5:00 am every Monday and Friday morning and 6:00 am on Saturdays and Sundays) so one 8:30 morning class wouldn’t kill me.

When it’s time for practice in the afternoons though my body takes the toll for my ridiculously early mornings. I always look forward to practice though. I love our team and I love the game of volleyball. I feel more excited to go to practice this year than I have in my three previous years on the team. Maybe it’s because I know after this season my life with volleyball will never be the same, or maybe it’s because I have higher hopes for our team now than I ever have before, or it just might be that I have a leadership role on the team this year not only as one of our captains but also because I stepped up to become a middle hitter which our team so desperately needed.

The loss of some key players on our roster from last year has been one of the greatest obstacles the Webster volleyball team has had to overcome early on in the season. Between the loss of two talented seniors and the disappointing news that three other starters would not be returning, the team has had to make some major changes. We got a little taste of just how well these changes were going to work at the Wash U scrimmage this past Sunday, August 30th, and I think it’s safe to conclude we’re going to be just fine.

Since my freshman year at Webster we have lost so many amazing players whether to personal conflicts or graduation, and I am always amazed at the way the team is able to bounce back and how someone new or unexpected is able to step up and fill the void that the success of our team was threatened by.

Until Next Time,
Stefanie M. Larson
