Stefanie Larson's Volleyball Student-Athlete Blog #2

In the past, Labor Day weekend has been a rather leisurely weekend for me. I usually go back to my hometown, Delavan, Illinois, to hang out with friends and family and enjoy the small town Delavan Fall Festival festivities. This year was the first year in my life that I didn’t make it to that festival, not even for a single day.

Instead, the Webster volleyball team had a two-day tournament Friday and Saturday at Washington University. Our team went into the tournament with high hopes, which were abruptly brought back down to earth by our first loss on Friday against Hope College. We played Wash U. less than an hour later and lost to them in three games, but only losing the first one 23-25.

As we continued through the weekend we lost to Millikin and then beat Augustana, two teams that were pretty evenly matched in talent and skill. Why then did we lose to one and beat the other? …because our team continues to face consistency issues. We hang with a team ranked 5th in the nation one minute and in the next get defeated by a team not even mentioned in the pre-season top 25! If we are going to break the mold this year we need to find the thing that causes our imbalanced play and get it straightened out.

After ending the tournament with a win on Saturday I spent the rest of the weekend with my dad, mom, younger sister and our family dog, a min pin named Roxie, who came down to stay at my house. I don’t get to see them very much anymore because of school, work and volleyball so I always have a great time with them when we do get together. And thanks to my amazing dad, I finally have a washer and dryer after living in my house for over a year!

Unfortunately though, the weekend couldn’t just be hang time with the fam. I had to work for five hours on Sunday and four hours on Monday. Plus, I spent a couple of hours each day on the ten page paper that’s due Tuesday.

I don’t know if I mentioned this last time but I’m an Advertising/Marketing major and I’ve chosen to become a copywriter. When I chose that as an emphasis I decided to pursue a professional writing minor. So I am currently taking three writing courses at once, fiction writing, professional writing and a magazine production. Needless to say I have over 20 pages in papers due this week.

Cheers,
Stefanie M. Larson
